RUBY LENNOX - ALGORITHMIC OPEN DESIGN
HALFWAY
GARMENTS
USER LED DESIGN
HALFWAY GARMENTS ARE DESIGNED BY THE ALGORITHM TO A POINT AND THEN LEFT UNFISIHED TO BE COMPLETED BY THE USER. THEY COMBINE THE LOGICAL RANDOMNESS OF THE ALGORITHMS WITH THE PERSONAL AESTHETIC DECISIONS OF THE WEARER.
BOTH GARMENTS SHOWN ABOVE WERE MADE FROM THE SAME ALGORITHMICALLY GENERATED PATTERN BUT COMPLETED BY DIFFERENT DESIGNERS. THE FORM OF THE HALFWAY PRODUCT HERE WAS A PATTERN OF 9 PIECES PARTIALLY SEWN TOGETHER INTO 5 SEPARATE SHAPES - SHOWN ABOVE. THIS CREATES SOME SHARED DETAILING SUCH AS SPECIFIC PLEATING AND SETS PARAMETERS AROUND THE POSSIBLE OUTCOMES BUT LEAVES THE SILHOUETTE AND FUNCTION OF THE GARMENT COMPLETELY UP TO THE USER.
HALFWAY PRODUCTS COULD TAKE MANY FORMS WITHIN THIS PROJECT. THE EXAMPLE OF SHOWN ABOVE OF A HALF SEWN GARMENT FITS BEST INTO TIMELINE 3 - WHERE THE USER IS THE CONSTRUCTOR.
ANOTHER OPTION WOULD BE AN ANNOTATED PATTERN - ALSO SHOWN ABOVE - WHERE THE USER IS GIVEN ALL THE INFORMATION FOR THE ALGORITHMIC PATTERN GENERATION AND CONSTRUCTION BUT MUST SOURCE THEIR OWN FABRIC OR BASE GARMENT. THIS WORKS WELL WITH TIMELINES 2 AND 3 - WHERE THE USER DOESNT GENERATE BUT CAN ALTER THE ALGORITHM.
FINALLY, THE USER COULD GENERATE THE HALFWAY PRODUCT TO BE GIVEN TO A SEPARATE PRODUCER. THIS COULD WORK THROUGH GUIDED WORKSHOPS OR MORE INDEPENDENTLY AND USER - USER COLLABORATIVELY. THIS WORKS BEST WITH TIMELINES 1 AND 2 - WHERE THE USER HAS MORE CONTROL OVER THE ALGORITHMS SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
